Roofing in the Winter? It Happens

Why do we always think of roofing only in the summer? Easier to install? Less cost? Not as Messy?

What about all those fallen trees and roofs that get split wide open?

Roof replacement can happen any time of year, partial of full.

Here's the inside story.....same with real estate.

Most people think that the real estate season starts in the Spring and stops after Labor Day. The same applies with a lot of contracting work. Nothing could be further from the truth. The reality is that real estate and roofing transactions move on right through the Fall and Winter seasons.

In fact, there could be better bids and pricing during these seasons as most people and contractors feel that the markets have "slowed down".

So. lets talk roofing in the winter. Here's what you need to know to get started.

Personal: Are you planning on staying in your home for at least five-ten years? You may not want to put on a new roof if it is not needed and you are planning to move. If it is needed and you are planning to move, be prepared for an inspection that says you need a new roof and the buyer wants one as a part of the deal, or a cash discount.

Style: The types of roofing have become more sophisticated, and there are many choices that fit for our Oregon weather patterns of lots of rain. Consider these styles of roof tiles:

Cedar: a cedar roof is a beautiful renewable resource with a natural look and feel.

Composite: Shingles and shakes - a popular and practical roofing style - many choices

Architectural composition - also known as asphalt shingles

Ok, now let's browse some shingles starting with the Owens Corning web site. This link will take you directly to the "browse shingles". Choosing the right shingle for your home is fun, and Owens Corning has a wide variety of styles to choose from. But we don't want you to stop there. We want you to browse two other manufacturers sites that we have found to have the best quality and warranties on the market. So read on, use the links that we have provided that will open up a different browser window, and when you close that window feel free to try the next link of the next manufacturer web sites "shingle browser" pages. Then call us for questions when you are ready for a bid. We can save you up to 40% in costs of materials, so do you think the phone might be worth your time? we agree ! Let's get started with browsing :

1) Owens Corning - as shown in this screenshot, make sure your zip code is showing or selected in the top right area of the page. Then feel free to choose the filters for family of tiles and color of tiles as you browse. Don't forget to scroll down the page to see search results.
Here's the link: Owens Corning Roofing Solutions >

2) Pabco -
Design your own roof web program - this is a fancy web application where you can actually upload a photo and see how different styles look.

Compare products - on this page you can compare up to five different types of styles and specific tiles to compare with each other.

Malarkey - a Portland based company - has a great residential roofing page for browsing.
Residential roofing page >  "Defining excellence"

We hope that this browsing roofing resource page has been helpful. As a professional roofing contractor with years of experience, the next step might be to call us. Roofing Essentials Video Educates Homeowners

by Gene Makarenko
V.A. and Sons Construction

Owens Corning provides excellent roofing solutions for homeowners. In addition, they have some great educational videos on the "nuts and bolts" of roofing; what all is involved in the process besides the shingles that you see on the surface. Like an iceberg, the surface is only a part of the whole picture. Owens Corning's Video - Roofing Essentials Accessories shows all the other parts of the story and why they are important as well as the shingles on the top.

Enjoy the short video, from the Owen Corning's YouTube channel. As a licensed roofing contractor, Owens Corning is one of the roofing manufacturers that we offer to our customers.

Roofing Contractor Expands Products

V.A. and Sons, Inc., a roofing contractor in Salem, Oregon, continues to expand it’s  line of roofing materials with some of the top manufacturers in the U.S.

“When we look for quality materials and suppliers, we evaluate a company for their leadership in the industry, their ability to improve their products, their reliability, and also whether they offer sustainable green alternatives for our roofing customers.”, says Gene Makarenko, owner of V.A. and Sons Construction. “If a customer has a preference for a particular manufacturer such as Owens Corning, we will honor this as long as we know that the manufacturer is reputable.”, he said.
“ We represent many different companies and products, and try to match the roofing brand and style to the customer instead of the customer to a particular brand or product. We are independent”.

One of the most important things to consider about roofing is the condition of the framing and areas under the existing roof. With Oregon weather as it is, it is important to make sure that all of the areas under the roof are secure and free of dry rot or other issues. A new roof usually is only replaced once in a lifetime. Taking your time to make the right informed decisions about a new roof is a good idea.
Most roofing company blogs would not provide the web site addresses of any of their manufacturers. In today’s world of transparency and accessibility, doing browsing on the Internet is encouraged in this blog !

V.A. and Sons has sample tiles of various brands and also encourages those thinking of having a new roof installed to browse Google with specific manufacturers. Here are some links to a few (of the many) of the suppliers that we work with :
Owens Corning
PabCO
Malarkey
By browsing through these sites you can see the quality of roofing manufacturers that we use, as well as a wide range of styles, colors, and ideas for your home. We have roofing experience since 1996 and are familiar with which brands and their products might be the best fit for your budget and roofing plans. Take notes, write down your questions, and then give us a call for a free estimate.
