Roofing in the Winter? It Happens

Why do we always think of roofing only in the summer? Easier to install? Less cost? Not as Messy?

What about all those fallen trees and roofs that get split wide open?

Roof replacement can happen any time of year, partial of full.

Here's the inside story.....same with real estate.

Most people think that the real estate season starts in the Spring and stops after Labor Day. The same applies with a lot of contracting work. Nothing could be further from the truth. The reality is that real estate and roofing transactions move on right through the Fall and Winter seasons.

In fact, there could be better bids and pricing during these seasons as most people and contractors feel that the markets have "slowed down".

So. lets talk roofing in the winter. Here's what you need to know to get started.

Personal: Are you planning on staying in your home for at least five-ten years? You may not want to put on a new roof if it is not needed and you are planning to move. If it is needed and you are planning to move, be prepared for an inspection that says you need a new roof and the buyer wants one as a part of the deal, or a cash discount.

Style: The types of roofing have become more sophisticated, and there are many choices that fit for our Oregon weather patterns of lots of rain. Consider these styles of roof tiles:

Cedar: a cedar roof is a beautiful renewable resource with a natural look and feel.

Composite: Shingles and shakes - a popular and practical roofing style - many choices

Architectural composition - also known as asphalt shingles

Ok, now let's browse some shingles starting with the Owens Corning web site. This link will take you directly to the "browse shingles". Choosing the right shingle for your home is fun, and Owens Corning has a wide variety of styles to choose from. But we don't want you to stop there. We want you to browse two other manufacturers sites that we have found to have the best quality and warranties on the market. So read on, use the links that we have provided that will open up a different browser window, and when you close that window feel free to try the next link of the next manufacturer web sites "shingle browser" pages. Then call us for questions when you are ready for a bid. We can save you up to 40% in costs of materials, so do you think the phone might be worth your time? we agree ! Let's get started with browsing :

1) Owens Corning - as shown in this screenshot, make sure your zip code is showing or selected in the top right area of the page. Then feel free to choose the filters for family of tiles and color of tiles as you browse. Don't forget to scroll down the page to see search results.

Malarkey - a Portland based company - has a great residential roofing page for browsing.
